(WSBT) An economic crunch in South Bend`s budget could mean the end for the city`s greenhouses. Monday night the Common Council will vote on a budget that closes them for good.

Broad acre farmers in the future could find themselves using hundreds of miniature greenhouses to save soil moisture and improve growth rates in their crops.

Cornell researchers are working to extend the growing and selling seasons by as much as 10 weeks. Their method is a so-called high tunnel project using unheated greenhouses to grow various crops to see how practical they are for New York state growers.

Greenhouses and lawn parking also discussed. SOUTH BEND -- Although the Common Council passed the city budget for 2007, several loose ends such as funding for the College Football Hall of Fame, Project Future and the future of the city greenhouses remain unresolved.

The greenhouses are open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Six-inch pots cost $5, and 14-inch pots cost $25.
